Brazil Population Review

Brazil is the largest country in South America and Latin America and the fifth-largest country by area and sixth most populous country in the world. Officially known as the Federative Republic of Brazil, the country has 212.7 million people and borders all other countries in South American except for Ecuador and Chile. Brazil covers 47.3% of the continent’s land area and is home to diverse wildlife and a unique environmental heritage, making it one of the world’s 17 megadiverse countries.

Brazil has had over a hundred years of mass migration from around the world, which has made it a deeply multicultural and ethnically diverse nation. Its official language is Portuguese, and it is the most populous Roman Catholic-majority country.

A dropping birth rate and mounting death rate

The combination of a mounting death rate, low net migration, and a falling birth rate will mean that Brazil’s population growth will begin to slow every year after 2040. The country is also expected to begin aging rapidly as the median age rises from around 32 years old to around 44 years old in 2050. This increase in the aging population will start to tax Brazil’s social programs and affect the country’s economy as it loses more and more of its working population.

Extreme poverty on the rise

The number of those living in extreme poverty in Brazil is on the rise, with an estimated 15.2 million people living on less than $1.90 a day in 2017. There is around 13 percent of the population—or 27 million people—who are currently living in households that fail to meet a healthy standard in one of four categories: physical characteristics, access to services, occupancy conditions, or goods in the household. There is also a noted issue with household occupancy, with 12.2 million people reporting that they sleep with over 3 people per bedroom. As of 2013, there were two million people living in favelas, or slums, with high crime rates and as high rate of disease and infant mortality.

A movement to urbanization

Brazil's major metropolitan areas have experienced a dramatic increase in urbanization in the past 70 years. In 1960, Brazil's urban and rural population were almost even, with around 70 million people split almost evenly between rural and urban living areas. Since then, the urban population has continued to grow to almost 80% of the country's population—with 185 million people living in major metropolitan areas.

Brazil has 17 cities with over a million residents, with seven of these having more than 2 million residents. The two most populated cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have a total population of 18, 970,926 people, as of 2019.

Uncontacted tribes

There is a faction of Brazil’s population that has never been calculated or added to any census: the uncontacted Indians of Brazil. Living deep in the Amazon rainforest, there are thought to be over 70 tribes of uncontacted peoples. While brief interactions with ranchers or missionaries have often resulted in the death of tribe members—either through violence or exposure to illness. Overall, there are 305 tribes living in Brazil today, with around 900,000 people.

The world’s largest carnival

Each year, Rio de Janeiro hosts the world’s largest carnival in the first week of March. Each day, the carnival attracts 2 million people. The carnival is a unique combination of Portuguese and African culture and is also rooted in Catholicism as a celebration before the 40 days of lent. In 2019, 1.7 million tourists arrived in Rio De Janeiro to celebrate carnival season.
